Work Out. Sweat It Out.

Let’s be honest – we’ve all made excuses not to go to the gym. “But I’m tired.” “But I need a manicure.” “But I missed Game of Thrones and need to watch it before I read what happens on Facebook.”

Since starting Eventurously, we’ve struggled with making fitness a priority in our daily routines. We easily get caught up in our work, and attend networking events in the afternoons/nights. But since starting to work for ourselves, we’ve realized that it’s vital to take a break during our busy day to get physical and work up a sweat. As the great Matthew McConaughey says, “sweat every day, no matter what”.

While writing this blog post, we turned to our friend Miki Agrawal and her book “Do Cool Sh*t” for our “startup sweat” inspiration. She writes about the healthy components of staying in shape, and the importance of physically pushing yourself for mental healthiness. It’s not diet and exercise, she says. It’s the ability to mentally reframe these terms and think about them in a whole new way. “Reframe the word diet and use the word power. Reframe the word exercise and use the word release”.

Since taking her advice, we’ve incorporated a “startup sweat” session into our daily routines. Some may find an easy “fix” like wearing Spanx or baggy clothes, but at some point sooner or later we’re going to have to get naked, and we may not be alone. We have found that the easiest way to get to the gym and boost our individual confidence and motivation is the support from one another. Finding a gym partner not only makes sweating more fun, but also holds each party accountable for going to the gym.

Working out releases endorphins (natural uppers), and relieves stress and tension to improve your mood. So think of working out as a way powering up your body and releasing all the bad toxins – definitely something you don’t want to avoid!

Now think…how are YOU powering up your body on a daily basis?

Swerve Fitness: Together We Ride

I’m sure you’ve all have heard of the various indoor cycling classes offered these days, but have you ever heard of SWERVE? Besides being named one of the best new boutique gyms in America by Details Magazine, it’s the world’s first TEAM inspired cycling workout. Don’t worry, you don’t have to come with a team – SWERVE will put you on one! Riders are divided into three teams (red, green, and blue) that compete against each other throughout class.

SWERVE allows you to track your performance right on your own bike. Only the team’s average scores are displayed on the scoreboards in class and your personal stats will be emailed to you after class. For an extra boost of energy, SWERVE offers a delicious Smoothie Bar with a variety of post-workout smoothies.

We sat down with Eric Posner, Co-founder and CEO of SWERVE Fitness to ask him a few questions.

Eventurously: What made you decide to take on this adventure?

Eric: Before starting SWERVE, my partners and I worked in Sales roles at Investment Banks. We began taking clients to fitness boutiques instead of the usual dinner or drinks because it enabled us to bond in a unique way, while also getting in a great workout. It created a powerful sense of camaraderie – something we all missed from our days of team sports. That’s where the idea for SWERVE, the first team inspired cycling workout was born.

Eventurously: What makes swerve different than SoulCycle or Flywheel?

Eric: SWERVE offers a unique workout structured around team competition and drills. Our core belief is that working out in teams makes fitness more fun and more effective. However, riders do NOT need to come with a team. Any individual rider can join a class by booking a bike on any team they prefer (red, blue, or green).

Our technology allows riders to see their personal scores on their console, and they can view their team’s average scores on the large scoreboards hanging in the studio. During class, riders can win extra points for their team through drills and sprints. Our instructors use the interactive technology to engage the class and utilize the team format to create an ice-breaker friendly environment that adds an extra layer of motivation.

Because each rider’s scores remain anonymous, there is no added pressure to perform – but when riders see others on their team working hard, trust me – it is contagious.

After class each rider is emailed his/her stats i.e. how many calories burned, miles biked, how they ranked in class, how they ranked on their team, etc. liDIS

Eventurously: What’s next for Swerve?

Eric: Expansion! Real Estate is the name of the game and we are currently looking in various cities across the US.

Topi: The Only App That Connects Everyone At Any Event

Company Name: Topi

Website: topi.com

Twitter: twitter.com/topi

Facebook: facebook.com/topiapp

Have you ever been to an event and needed a reason to start a conversation with another attendee? Have no fear, Topi is here! Before introducing yourself, the Topi app allows you to access relevant content about the event and the people attending, to encourage engagement.

Topi searches LinkedIn and Facebook profiles to let attendees find interesting people to connect with. One of it’s coolest features, “geo-fencing”, allows guests to search other attendees physically located at their event. Once guests have created their own profile, Topi offers a “WhatsApp” style chat for both 1×1 and group discussions.

Eventurously recently sat down with Topi’s COO Eric Francois to learn more about what they do, and how they’re currently transforming the event technology industry…

Eventurously: What Is Your Favorite Topi Feature?

Topi (Eric): Difficult to decide – there are a few!  Debating between geo-fencing and interest-based group conversations… hum.  Will go with the chat rooms.  They’re meaningful because it is replicating in the app the way we meet new people in real life – it almost always starts in groups (before moving to a 1×1 format) and having a “connector” is essential to break the ice or simply to keep the conversation going.

E: What Topi Accomplishment Are You Most Proud Of So Far?

T: Also a few of course – we’re a young company so all major milestones mean a lot.  I will say being selected as the official networking app for Social Media Week comes very high up on my list.  It is a global, well-known event with a wonderful, tight community and we were proud to add our technology to further engage its members.

E: What’s Next For Topi?

T: A very long list of improvements and cutting edge features.  We’re very tech focused but also cognizant that whatever we do needs to have value for event goers, event planners, sponsors, etc.  For example live translations in chats – cutting edge and at the same time valuable for attendees from all over the world to interact.  All items on our roadmap fulfill this key goal. We love to push the envelop and collaborate with creative minds… so watch out for many cool features soon.

We Live Eventurously…Care To Join?

Have you ever had to make a life changing decision? Have you ever left your job, broke up with your significant other, or packed up your life and moved to a new city? These are not light decisions to make, but sometimes what stands in between you and happiness is comfort. This comfort zone, although cozy and familiar, can hold you back from reaching your full potential.

We at Eventurously found that out together. Kelsey and Amanda – two girls born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, made our way to New York City in 2011 with no job, no apartment, and no career direction. Although we floated through a few jobs over the years, we were never fully satisfied.

Being best friends since we were 13, and both at continuous crossroads in our careers, we were looking for a drastic career (and life) change. Amanda was no longer interested in staying in her role at a law firm, and Kelsey was over working for a large technology company, but definitely did not want to leave the startup world. We both wanted/needed something new, but were terrified of change. After much discussion, and unconditional love and support from our family and friends, we decided we must quit our jobs and start fresh. What better person to completely leave your comfort zone with than your best friend? We dove in headfirst.

Next step was to figure out WHAT to do. What were we good at (besides being awesome)? Planning and organizing awesome events, that’s what! In October of 2013, Amanda and I incorporated and officially started Eventurously. We now pride ourselves on being the premiere event planning company catered to the event and marketing needs of startups in NYC. We’re able to say say that we’ve worked with incredible companies such as Facebook, Google, Twitter, Vine, and Urban Compass. We’re learning something new every day, and have never been happier! Although some days are challenging, we’re in this together. We wake up every morning exciting to see what the day brings, and how we can better ourselves, each other, and Eventurously.

So what is your Living Eventurously take away? Life begins at the end of your comfort zone. Join us on our startup journey as we post about our company’s highs & lows, events, technology, New York City, and all things we deem epic (be prepared for multiple food posts and lots of laughs).
